Alternative and Complementary Treatments for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)
What is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome?
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a type of dysautonomia (an umbrella term for health conditions that affect the functioning of the autonomic nervous system). POTS is characterized by reduced blood circulation when standing upright from a reclining position. The blood temporarily pools in the lower extremities of the body, which results in reduced blood flow to and from the heart.
Alternative and complementary treatments for POTS
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome symptoms vary in severity. There is no known cure for POTS; however, treatment can help ease symptoms. With proper treatment, up to 90% of individuals with POTS report that their symptoms are manageable.
Yoga
Yoga is an ancient mind-body practice developed in India. It involves physical poses, breathing and relaxation. A simple form of yoga with a focus on breathing can help reduce POTS symptoms.
Meditation
Meditation can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety that often accompany living with POTS. It may also reduce POTS symptoms.
Traditional Chinese medicine
Eastern medicine, specifically traditional Chinese medicine (especially Chinese herbs and acupuncture), has proven to be an effective treatment for POTS. If Chinese medicine is a treatment option, consulting with a certified, experienced Chinese herbalist is essential. Individuals must inform their doctors and pharmacists of any herbs they are considering adding to their treatment plan as herbs can negatively interact with each other, prescription medications, and over-the-counter medications.
