There are a variety of therapies that help distract or relax the mind including: art, talk therapy, cognitive behavior therapy. Meditation, deep breathing, calming music, and relaxing scents can help calm the mind. Exercise can help boost endorphins, improve mood, and block pain signals to the brain.

Cortisol, often referred to as the 'stress hormone' as it is activated in reaction to stress is produced by the adrenal glands. When higher levels of cortisol are activated, an individual's vulnerability to pain increases.
