5 Healing Foods to Fight Pain
A combination of treatment approaches is often the best method to reduce chronic pain. One alternative treatment approach that is often overlooked is incorporating foods with anti-inflammatory benefits into the diet. These five foods are part of a healthy diet and eating them may even reduce pain flare-ups.
1. Coffee
Caffeine reduces inflammation in the body. Even low doses of caffeine (about the amount in one standard cup of coffee) can help diminish pain sensitivity.
2. Olive Oil
People who consume a Mediterranean diet, which is rich in olive oil, tend to have fewer health conditions related to inflammation. Extra-virgin olive oil may help reduce pain, as it contains compounds similar to ibuprofen.
3. Red Grapes
Resveratrol, a chemical with anti-inflammatory benefits, is found in red grapes. Resveratrol stops specific cells in the body from reacting to inflammation signals.
4. Ginger
Ginger not only eases nausea, but it also contains inflammation-fighting compounds. Including it in a delicious stir fry is an easy way to incorporate it into the diet.
5. Salmon
Salmon is a healthy addition to any diet. It is a deep-sea fish that contains a wealth of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation. Salmon also contains calcitonin, which reduces inflammation in the joints and may help reduce osteoarthritis pain.
In addition to these five foods, many other foods aid in pain reduction. Notably, the spices turmeric and thyme provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Oranges and tart cherries are tasty fruits to include in a healthy diet to reduce the risk of developing anti-inflammatory conditions; both of these are also available in juice form.
