Nutrition Is Important for Pain Management
Role of nutrition
Chronic pain is often caused by inflammation throughout the body. There are exceptions, of course, but in most cases, chronic pain involves some level of systemic inflammation. Proper nutrition can reduce chronic pain as it directly impacts the level of inflammation in the body.
Anti-Inflammatory diet
An anti-Inflammatory diet often reduces chronic pain, improves mood and benefits overall health. It often mirrors the Mediterranean diet in many food choices. The idea is to maximize anti-inflammatory vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and micronutrients including the following:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Olive Oil (especially extra virgin)
- Salmon
- Sardines
- Mackerel
- Flaxseed Oil
Antioxidant Polyphenols
- Fruits (especially berries)
- Nuts
- Legumes
- Dark green leafy vegetables
- Whole grains
A plate of variety
People should aim for a variety of healthy foods instead of always choosing a few favorites. At meal time, filling half a plate with whole grains and healthy proteins and the other half with vegetables and fruits is recommended.
