Anxiety and stress can wreak havoc on a healthy lifestyle. Eight simple tips to help manage stress and anxiety include the following:

  1. Limit caffeine
Excess caffeine consumption can contribute to anxiety, so if anxiety is an issue, limiting or eliminating caffeine intake is advised. Caffeine can be found in coffee, teas, chocolate, and energy drinks. Depending on caffeine sensitivity, try herbal tea instead of coffee or gradually limit caffeine consumption.
  2. Chew gum
Chewing a stick of gum may relieve stress levels. Studies show that vigorously chewing gum increases blood flow to the brain and influences brain waves.
  3. Incorporate lavender
Lavender has calming and relaxing properties. Simply inhaling the scent of lavender can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. Lavender oil massages have also proven to be beneficial.
  4. Drink chamomile tea
Moderate consumption of tea has been proven to increase happiness levels. Drinking chamomile tea promotes relaxation and improves overall sleep quality. This combats anxiety and can also reduce long-term effects of chronic stress.
  5. Socialize with family and friends
Spending quality time with friends and family provides a sense of belonging and support during trying times. Connecting with loved ones helps reduce stress and anxiety.
  6. Engage in physical activity
Exercise is an excellent way to reduce anxiety and promote overall health. It releases endorphins, the “feel good” chemicals in the brain. Regular physical activity also lowers cortisol, a stress hormone.
  7. Take warm baths
Warm baths ease tense muscles and promote relaxation. Adding Epsom salts to a warm bath is even more beneficial. Epsom salts contain magnesium, and when added to a warm bath, the magnesium is absorbed into the skin, which helps induce a calm and relaxed state.
  8. Enjoy the sunlight
Sunlight is one of the best ways to reduce anxiety. Just 5 to 15 minutes in the sun 3 times a week is beneficial. Sun exposure boosts mood, promotes relaxation, and provides the body with vitamin D, which improves physical and mental well-being.
