What to Expect at a Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection Appointment?
What are platelet-rich plasma injections?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are composed of plasma and platelets. PRP is produced by spinning blood in a centrifuge until it separates. It may then be given as an injection to treat certain injuries and promote healing in the body.
Before the appointment
Prior to receiving a PRP injection, a health care professional may advise a person to stop taking certain medications, vitamins or supplements. These may include the following:
- Aspirin
- Ibuprofen
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Blood thinners
Eating a snack prior to the injection is recommended. Drawing blood can cause lightheadedness; therefore, eating before the procedure is beneficial.
During the appointment
Blood is drawn from the arm using an IV. The blood is then placed into a centrifuge and spun until it separates to produce platelet-rich plasma. The solution is injected into the affected area. Ultrasound may be used for a precise injection.
After the appointment
Typically, the treated area should not be washed for at least 48 hours following a PRP injection. Soreness and bruising at the injection area is likely. Any sharp or intense pain should be reported to the health care provider immediately.
