What are platelet-rich plasma injections?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are composed of plasma and platelets. PRP is produced by spinning blood in a centrifuge until it separates. It may then be given as an injection to treat certain injuries and promote healing in the body.

Candidates for platelet-rich plasma injections

PRP injections are a low-risk procedure that is generally safe because they use the patient’s own tissue. They may be beneficial for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. They also stimulate the healing process. Candidates for PRP injections include those with the following:

  • Tennis elbow
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Muscle injuries
  • Joint sprains
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Ligament tears
  • Hair loss
  • Post-surgical healing
  • Torn tendons

Considerations

Research involving PRP injections is ongoing. Additional studies are needed to determine the efficacy of the treatment on different conditions. PRP injections are also typically not covered by most insurance companies.
