Stress is something everybody faces at some point; it is a natural part of life. Stressful situations can strike at anytime and often when least expected. A few examples include getting caught at a railroad crossing while driving to a job interview, losing a wallet, comforting a crying newborn baby all night, or giving an important presentation in 5 minutes. These and numerous other life scenarios can cause stress and anxiety. Knowing how to handle stressful situations before they arise is important in living a healthy life. While there are many ways to relieve stress, the following techniques are powerful tools that work in just a few minutes.

1. Repeat a mantra

When faced with stressful situations or feelings, repeating a mantra helps relax the mind. Simply whispering a chosen mantra several times helps the mind refocus. This will cause the brain to focus on the repetition of the words rather than the stressor. Examples of mantras include the following:

  • This, too, shall pass
  • There is no danger
  • Let it go
  • Just for today
  • Be not afraid

2. Smile

When stress hits like a ton of bricks, an individual should take a few deep breaths and smile. Studies show that the mere act of smiling releases dopamine (the “feel good” chemical in the brain) which boosts a person’s mood even in stressful situations.

3. Listen to music

Studies show that listening to music decreases stress by reducing the level of cortisol (a stress hormone) in the body. Simply turning on the radio or putting on headphones to listen to music can ease the mind in a stressful situation.

Learning how to effectively deal with stress is an important part of maintaining good health. These basic tips can help reduce acute stress quickly and easily.
