With certain joint replacement surgeries, including hip or knee replacements, a prosthesis or artificial component is used to replace the damaged/diseased hip or knee joint. Age plays a role in joint replacement surgery. For example, knee surgery is generally reserved for those who are 55 years of age or older. Younger recipients of a knee replacement may need to undergo a revision surgery in the future.
